Everything we design is made with females in combat sports in mind. We're talking about the little things, like wardrobe malfunctions during sparring or rolling, the need for support in certain places, the kinds of cuts and colours that would match our gis, shin guards and muay thai shorts. We make it a point to include little details that represent who we are as fighters and the community we belong to, or as we call, our fight tribe. For the longest time, the only gymwear that had any printed connection to combat sports was for men, or were designed by men. Finally we are creating something for women, and specifically women who want to show the community they are a part of. ••• Meet Sam, Founder of Athena Fightwear When I started Muay Thai in 2020 and inevitably fell in love with the sport (read: obsessed), I found myself going through a journey of regaining confidence in my body and needing an upgrade to my activewear wardrobe. While I loved muay thai shorts, I felt like I hadn't 'earned' it yet since I was still learning, and there was quite literally nothing else that spoke to the sport but had the chic look and feel that pilates and yogawear was so famous for. On top of that, once I did feel deserving of muay thai shorts, I struggled to find any that fit comfortably, with all the 'unisex' shorts either riding up where they shouldn't, being enormous at the waist or not going past the thighs because of how narrow the hips were. And lo and behold, it turned out I wasn't the only one facing these problems! With Athena Fightwear, I wanted to create something that was for us - for me and my friends and all the women who had an experience similar to ours. I wanted to carve out a space in the fightworld where we could feel we belonged because we were no longer an afterthought to a brand's range or a singular 'women's section' link on a website.
